Tue 11/10- Public Record, Tennis System RE-SCHEDULED!!

HELLO!  WE HAVE RE-SCHEDULED THIS SHOW FOR WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 16TH

BUY TICKETS

Public Record- Philadelphian septet, Public Record, blend together a vast array of musical genres ranging from early-disco to shoegaze; afro beat to Scottish Postcard pop; and northern soul to Factory Records funk. The product of this co-mingling of musical ideas and sensibilities is a refreshingly creative take on dance music that manages to surprise and bewilder listeners with each changing verse and track. This is not to say that Public Record’s music regularly bombards us with dramatic style shifts or taut genre “stunts.” The genre-bending explorations they make are often hidden in intricacy and familiarity. When it’s all said and done they could be described simply as a pop band or a dance band, but it is their complexity that will allow listeners to enjoy multiple dimensions otherwise figured to be missing from many groups today.

Tennis System- “Most bands that may share their appreciation for reverb and distortion or even large-scale sound might go for a dreamier route. But Tennis System goes straight for the gut. The songs are certainly well crafted, but their energy and sense of urgency assumes that no listener may have a second chance to notice it. They’re melodic and powerful without giving up their sensibilities of what they enjoy up to the alter of industry or blogosphere-deemed “cool.” But people are starting to take notice.” - DCist

Wed Nov 11- Drink Up Buttercup, Blood Warrior, The Sweetheart Parade, and Hop Along Queen Ansleis

BUY TICKETS

Drink Up Buttercup- The Bucks County natives mix Beatle’s-style pop music with gigantic psychedelic waves of perfection that seem to drip from somewhere in space. Like the perfect combination of 60s catchiness and 70s weirdness.

Blood Warrior- Like Greg Jamie’s other project, O’Death, the music of Blood Warrior is faithful to folk and bluegrass, but unlike O’Death’s dark Appalachian influence, Blood Warrior could be better described as melancholy prairie folk. The harmonies were also quite outstanding — as Jamie’s shakey tenor is complimented well by Kellas’ beautiful soprano and Weiss’s rich baritone and supplemented by Weiss’s melodic guitar lines.

The Sweetheart Parade- American Gothic folk blues, murder ballads, and broken-hearted lullabies

Hop Along, Queen Ansleis- “When you come to a Hop Along, Queen Ansleis show, you should bring something to shake or bang on, unless you’re the best damn clapper this side of the mississippi. kazoos are also welcome.”

Thu 11/12- Y-Rock Welcomes: The Weathervane Music Benefit with BC Camplight, Danielson, East Hundred, and Sunset

BUY TICKETS

Please check out this Weathervane Music Project Series from 2009 featuring most of the artists below!

BC Camplight- BC Camplight whose album Hide, Run Away has been circling the globe and amazing listeners. Call it Bacharach-esque or Brian Wilson meets the Shins. To us it’s just unbelieveably smart and infectious pop music.

Danielson- “The ecstatic vision of the Danielson project is the unnamable part, the impossible to describe part, and this ecstatic vision is cumulative.” -Rick Moody, author of The Ice Storm

East Hundred- East Hundred’s music is a haunting melodic landscape of loss, regret, and ultimately hope. If the young Philadelphia five-piece seems to wear its heart on its sleeve, it does so honestly.

{{{Sunset}}}- Earlier, this year, Austin-based band Sunset worked with producer Quentin Stoltzfus and engineers Amy Morrissey & Brian McTear to create a single as part of the Weathervane Music project. Check out a video of the song “Fishtown” or check out this fantastic video bio that they made!

The Weathervane Music Organization is a new non-profit community working with amazing independent musicians to support and advance their careers.

Here’s a taste of their Mission Statement:
“Today, there is a profound need for all of us to Actively Support the Music we LOVE. The Weathervane Community sees what it does as a cultural investment, and a model for how other organizations can do the same. If we don’t make this investment, careers in music will become limited to a privileged class of the independently wealthy, rather than the most sophisticated artists.

It is nearly impossible for artists to sustain a living from sales of their recordings the way they once did. Labels take on fewer projects that challenge the mold in favor of “safe” acts that are more likely to sell to the public. The vast majority of truly sophisticated musical groups and solo artists are therefore left to their own devices, forced to scale back on production and many of the other necessities of their art and craft.

The Project Series exists to produce and celebrate great works in independent music. The process of recording contains an unquantifiable part of a musician’s craft. The historical magic that happens when a great artist collaborates with a great producer in a great studio is simply too vital to let slip away.

At the same time, The Project Series will be an ongoing experiment in creating a new model for funding, producing and promoting great independent music… one that thrives on unique and sophisticated music… one in which the artists themselves can be compensated and remain the primary beneficiaries of their work, enjoying long lasting, sustainable careers in music… one that embraces all modern channels of distribution… and one that, through public participation and support, amplifies the long standing relationship between art and the culture that produces it.”

Sat 11/14- Y-rock Welcomes: The Armchairs, Cheers Elephant, Horse’s Mouth, and Univox

BUY TICKETS

The Armchairs- The Armchairs stand up for the hungry kids. Like a cross between a violent flamingo in a hamster cage gone awry, these ebullient fishtown youngsters grip their listeners with the vigor of ten norse gods with influences stretching from The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, The Zombies, The Beatles, Deerhoof, to Parliament and Funkadelic.

Cheers Elephant- “Their live show is what I would imagine would happen if a train marked “rock” smashed into a van marked “folk”, and then an airplane called “drugs” smashed into that mess, and then cool kids showed up to dance on the wreckage. Interestingly, their recorded stuff is much sweeter than the live show might suggest: they bring a manic intensity when they’re on stage, but their songs are legitimately layered and interesting in CD format, too.” - Soundcheckmagazine.com

Horse’s Mouth- “Tavo Carbone is an exceptional songwriter, somewhere loosely in the vein of Tom Waits and Frank Zappa and other oddball geniuses. His arrangements are lush and orchestral and sound as if they were filtered through a gramaphone. Highly recommended. Two more words on this: mouth trumpet” - Nailgun Media

Univox- Philadelphia’s Univox are ready to take listeners back to a time when pop music had balls. They cite The Kinks, David Bowie, and The Who as primary influences. This band of pop misfits combine 70’s sensibilities with Motown and punk influences to craft catchy, compelling songs that are elusive and engaging in a very charming yet brutal way.

BUY TICKETS

Shonen Knife- Shonen Knife is the legendary all-female Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka, Japan in 1981. Despite their pop-oriented nature, the trio maintains a distinctly underground garage rock sound rooted in edgy instrumentation and D.I.Y. aesthetics.

Jeff the Brotherhood- Featuring two ex members of Be Your Own Pet.JEFF The Brotherhood is Jake and Jamin Orrall, two brothers that play drums and guitar. They grew up in Tennessee making music and trying to have a good time. The Brotherhood has been called “kraut punk”, “psychedelic grunge” and “noise pop” drawing comparisons to bands like Hawkwind, Wipers, and early Sonic Youth. Their fast-paced blend of psychedelic garage rock has been waking up neighbors from surrounding basements for a few years now. Nashville!
