Steve Coleman and Five Elements (Night Two)
Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to announce a late addition to our Spring season, presenting Steve Coleman & Five Elements for two performances at Johnny Brenda’s preceding their weeklong run at New York’s historic Village Vanguard.

Hailing the saxophonist/composer’s latest, Synovial Joints, as his favorite album of 2015, New York Times jazz critic Nate Chinen said that Coleman “hasn’t met a complex system he couldn’t hijack and adapt for creative uses. On this absorbing album, partly inspired by anatomical terms of movement… Mr. Coleman and his crew keep the music light and lithe, with a slithery sense of groove.”

In recent years, Steve Coleman has received a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a pair of awards from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. He’s been hailed as an influence by some of the most innovative artists in modern music, including pianists Vijay Iyer and Jason Moran. His supremely flexible and inventive band Five Elements – featuring guitarist Miles Okazaki, trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, drummer Sean Rickman and Philly-based bassist Anthony Tidd – was last presented by ANW in a pair of unforgettable evenings at Bartram’s Garden celebrating the summer solstice and autumnal equinox.
