CARACARA

Caracara has always had ambitions past Philadelphia. They could have stemmed from the project’s genesis: the implosion of former bands, the impact of long-distance communication and travel in relationships, the inevitability of experimentation and expansion. Styles and symbols seem to shift throughout their music, alternating from shimmering indie to whispers of neo-folk before relishing in the cathartic push of post-rock. This fluidity introduces a band with no point of origin, built from the mysterious clamor of noise as much as they are inspired by it.

Caracara have begun to garner more and more attention for their dynamic and formidable approach to “distorted emotional music,” as they so call it. Their 2017 debut, Summer Megalith, was not only praised by Pitchfork as “some of the most immediately cathartic indie rock of recent times,” but led the band straight to an equally ambitious young producer-on-the-rise named Will Yip. Together they created 2019’s “Better” EP, the eponymous title track of which was regarded by Pitchfork- “Whatever you want to feel, “Better” is big enough to cover it.” Yip also remastered Summer Megalith for a limited 12” vinyl pressing which will be available via his label Memory Music in late 2019.

“I knew I needed to work with this band the second I heard them,” says Yip, who has been working with Caracara at his Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA, and has produced breakout albums from bands like Circa Survive, Title Fight, and Pianos Become the Teeth. “Their live shows, like the core of their songs, are just huge and inspiring, with an energy that is so unique to them. We’re going to do something special together.”

Since Summer Megalith was initially released, Caracara have performed alongside Pianos Become the Teeth, Spirit of The Beehive, Kississippi, Mannequin Pussy, Remo Drive, Special Explosion, American Please Club, Pkew Pkew Pkew, and more. Time well spent playing these songs on the road have carved out a clear path for Caracara to continue their exploration of catharsis well into their very promising future.

BAD HEAVEN LTD.

Bad Heaven Ltd. began in 2016 as a recording project in Galm’s North Philadelphia home. In the wake of several louder, more visceral projects, Galm’s music was beginning to take a new shape: gentle, dynamic and catchy yet retaining the emotionally intense, resonant and viscerally relatable songwriting he's become known for. These changes were reflected on the debut Bad Heaven Ltd. album cool hell, co-released by Topshelf Records and Square of Opposition Records. Bad Heaven Ltd. spent the bulk of 2018 working on their follow-up LP, strength, with Evan Bernard engineering (Spirit of the Beehive, Mannequin Pussy) at Big Mama’s Studio in Philadelphia.

In its brisk 29-minute runtime, strength packs more into the eleven songs than most bands manage in a career. From the dusky, Dylan-quoting slowcore of “inp” to the gently-quaking closer “forever,” Bad Heaven Ltd. manage to bring everything from string-laden fuzz freakouts on “almost”, to jangly power pop on “new boy”, to stark, meditative country-folk on the precariat anthem “100” with a sense of urgency that is belied by the nonchalant sweetness in Galm's delivery.

Bad Heaven Ltd. deftly document a more personal time of unease. With keen ears and a clear vision, Galm and the band have made a record that’s somehow as cohesive as it is daring.

With prescient songwriting and a capacity to touch on ubiquitous struggles “strength”, Bad Heaven Ltd. are firmly positioned as a band to watch in 2019.
