The Philadelphia-based band Square Peg Round Hole releases it’s third LP, Branches, on the National Sawdust Tracks label on November 8, 2019. The band will tour in support of album, including a release-party event at National Sawdust in Brooklyn on November 8. Other tour stops include Baltimore, Philadelphia, Columbus, and a showcase at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Indianapolis on November 14.

Square Peg Round Hole is an instrumental percussion-based trio described by NPR’s Bob Boilen as a “creative adventure.” Evan Chapman, Sean M. Gill, and Carlos Pacheco-Perez utilize drum kits, vibraphone, samples, found objects, synths, and vintage analog

keep reading keyboards, to create music that draws on elements from post-rock, electronic, ambient, and contemporary classical genres. The music is expansive, intricately textured, and dynamic, but the group’s knack for hooks and melodic structure provides a soulful center.

Square Peg’s studio albums illuminate the group’s capacity for exploration. The second record, Juniper, released in 2016 on Spartan Records, garnered the band national attention. The introspective album was composed rural Maryland and remote Wisconsin, and was recorded almost entirely live in full takes. The creative process around Juniper established a tighter sound, with more clearly defined roles, and greater confidence.

Square Peg’s third LP, Branches, stands as a more collaborative and outward-looking artistic endeavor. The album was recorded in Nashville with producer and drumming legend Darren King (MuteMath, Kanye West, Sucré). Living in King’s attic and immersing themselves in his studio opened the group up to new techniques, and pushed them into unexpected sonic terrain. The performances are also more collaborative with Branches featuring Variant Six (members of Grammy-award winning vocal ensemble The Crossing), and Brooklyn-based powerhouse pop-duo Gracie & Rachel (fresh off of tours with Ani DiFranco and San Fermin).

SON STEP is a guitar-less, synth-drenched pop outfit based in Philadelphia, comprised of twin brothers Jon and Chris Coyle (vocals/synthesizers and bass), Joel Gleiser (vocals/electronics), and Matt Scarano (percussion). With their unique setup, the group expertly assembles twisted percussive layers and electric textures into songs that simultaneously speak in complex patterns and colorful, emotional terms. In this spirit, Son Step’s impending third full-length album, Fossilillies, is their most dynamic, evolved offering yet, a whirlwind of novel soundscapes where each member is an integral part of the process.

Nina Keith is a trans woman composer and multi-instrumentalist from Philadelphia. Her debut album MARANASATI 19111 features textured piano arrangements laced with vocals, flute, electronics and found sounds. While rooted in contemporary classical music, the record ebbs and flows with a unique human quality, informed by its compelling narrative.

Set in the woods, hospitals, and churches of Northeast Philadelphia, MARANASATI 19111 delves deeply into the memory networks of childhood. Inspired by her experience in EMDR therapy, Nina Keith explores a personal history marked by community tragedy and paranormal incidents, and seeks to create a more equanimous, reverent relationship with death and groundlessness.
