YallaPunk Festival
YallaPunk is a direct response to negative depictions of populations of middle eastern descent in mainstream media. This event is meant to highlight creative accomplishments of Arabs and Persians and serve as a safe space forum for discourse about social issues. The idea is to celebrate music, art, film and other cultural artifacts created by this particular population in an intersectional and inclusive space free from sexism, homophobia and bigotry.

In 2003, filmmaker James Spooner released the movie “Afro-punk,” a documentary about African Americans within the punk rock and Do-It-Yourself music community. The film later inspired a music and arts festival surrounding the same concept through an annual gathering. YallaPunk aims to be an annual gathering of Arab and Persian Americans who identify with the punk rock and DIY music community.

The festival will include music performances, speaker and discussion panels, a MENA merch marketplace and more.
