Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts - (Set time: 10:00 PM)
Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts
Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts (NYC, Rough Trade Records) play a crazy, original mix of scuzzy urban indie-rock, literate lyrics and comic book punk, like a 21st Century mash-up of Sonic Youth, Pete Seeger and R. Crumb. Jeffrey has done tours in Europe and America and Australia and Asia and elsewhere, a few tours every year since 2001, as well as sometimes playing as the opening act for bands like the Mountain Goats, Daniel Johnston, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Fall, Pulp, Roky Erickson, The Vaselines and other luminaries. Jeffrey has released seven critically acclaimed albums on Rough Trade Records, in addition to occasional self-releases and projects on other labels (like K Records and Don Giovanni), and Jeffrey continues to self-publish his art and writing in an ongoing underground comic book series called Fuff. Current Los Bolts bandmates Brent (Moldy Peaches) Cole on drums and Mem (Cat Tatt) Pahl on bass are sometimes joined by Jeffrey’s brother and longtime collaborator Jack Lewis, filling the band out from a 3-piece to a 4-piece for certain tours. Recent band projects include a covers album called “Works by Tuli Kupferberg (1923-2010)” on Don Giovanni Records, plus a deluxe vinyl reissue of the 2005 Rough Trade album “Jeffrey & Jack Lewis: City & Eastern Songs.” In March 2018 Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts recorded a brand new full-length original album in Nashville with producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo), with title and release date tba!
Strawberry Runners - (Set time: 9:00 PM)
Strawberry Runners
Strawberry Runners is the project of songwriter, Emi Night. Originally formed in Denver, CO, the band came to life in 2013. They are now based in her current home, Philadelphia.
You might fall for the shimmering guitars wrapped around bittersweet memories of Emi’s youth in the Ohio River Valley or her plaintive vocals that hint at a country-music education. The music is so catchy, so energetic and relaxed in turn, that on first listen you could miss the narrative being told, where love and pain bloom side by side.
The richness of her music is in Emi’s tender and easy integration of the varied styles she’s called home: with a humble faith in brevity, melody compels every word; with the mystery and familiarity of a hymn, the music stays in your ear like pop, and flares up with punk-rock verve; poignant scenes are conjured with respect, compassion, and generosity. These are the kind of songs that ring true no matter how close or far they hew to the incidents that inspired them; they are pictures painted from a life too often troubled by violence and fear but also graced with an inheritance of compassion, determination, and — best of all for us — music.
